St. Fergals Vocational School, Rathdowney, Laois


Construction of a 5 classroom extension , staff social and office areas, principles office and connections to the existing building. The classrooms included a specialist science room fully fitted, an art room, 3nr general classrooms, principle and assistant principle offices, pastors office, staff toilets, general office, meeting room, social areas along with full toilet facilities. The works also provided for a large interlink corridor servicing the existing separate building blocks on the school grounds. The total floor area was approximately 1100m2.

External Work

External ground works included concrete footpaths, wearing course macadam parking in extension of car-parking area and set down areas.


Consisted of traditional concrete strip foundation with fair faced insitu columns starters and a power-floated floor slab.


Consisted of insitu concrete fair faced finished columns and beam framing with Fine textured blockwork cavity wall infill construction. Roof construction consisted of Kingspan insulated panels and Trocal Membrane on a mixture of timber truss and steel frame.


Consisted mostly of modern design and detailing to suit department of Education requirements.


Details included the consolidation of existing underground services with new services such as low pressure hot water systems and soil waste pipes and the inclusion of extensive updating of existing services.
